2012/13 Artist-in-residence

The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) invites applications from working artists and MFA graduate students interested in conducting a project within the centre’s community of multidisciplinary scholars and students.

Purpose

The artist-in-residence program seeks to create mutually beneficial lines of exchange between scholars and artists who share an interest in themes at the intersection of religion and society. The residency will enrich the scholarly atmosphere of the centre by promoting engagement with the creative arts, and will assist artists to share and develop their practice within a university environment.

Eligibility

The fellowship is available to artists working in visual arts (painting, drawing, photography), film and video, literary arts (fiction, poetry, drama), performing arts (dance, music, theatre), design or new media, whose creative work can be reasonably conducted in a university office. Canadian and international professional artists, new artists and MFA students are encouraged to apply.

Value

The successful applicant will be awarded with the Chi-Chuang and Yien-Ying Hsieh Award for Art and Spirituality (approximate value $3,000). In addition, the position provides centrally located private office space on the scenic University of Victoria campus; library privileges; a congenial retreat-like setting with regular opportunities for cross-disciplinary engagement with other fellows at the centre; and opportunities for the showcasing of work though public readings, exhibits or performances.

Term

Fellowships are granted for a minimum four-month and a maximum twelve-month term, beginning September 2012.

Conditions

The artist-in-residence is expected to conduct his or her work on site at the CSRS and to participate actively in the programs and activities of the centre. At some point during the term of the fellowship, the candidate will offer a public presentation of his or her work.

Application Procedures

Applications should include a CV; a proposal of no more than 2000 words that includes i) a description of the applicant’s current creative practice, ii) a detailed summary of the project to be undertaken while at the CSRS, iii) a descriptive title for the proposed project, iv) a statement indicating the relevance of the project to the general mandate of the CSRS; a sample (text or images) of the applicant’s work; and the names of two referees who might speak to the quality of the proposal. The centre may also solicit the opinions of other referees.
